Ultra-Orthodox London Jews raising £1m to stop children from living with ‘irreligious parents’
Published time: 15 Aug, 2016 15:35

A group of British ultra-Orthodox Jews have launched a million-pound fundraising drive to stop “pure and holy children” from leaving the strict faith community and living with “irreligious parents".

The fundraising drive was set up to fund the legal fees of divorcing parents involved in child custody battles with ex-partners who want to join mainstream society, the Independent reports.

Flyers have been distributed in London’s Stamford Hill calling for the Charedi community to back the bid, saying: “Rescue the Children Convention: We now need one million pounds and therefore the community is requested to join in with a minimum sum of £500.”

The flyers were accompanied by a letter of support from a local rabbi stating that they wish to fight cases involving 17 children.

“To our great pain, and our misfortune, our community finds itself in a terrible situation – 17 of our pure and holy children where one of the parents, God rescue them, have gone out into an evil culture, and want to drag their children after them,” the letter, as seen by the Independent, reads.

“This is a degree of apostasy and this situation has motivated our rabbis who are in Israel… to come here in a personal capacity to increase prayer and to gather money for legal fees, and to achieve this a convention has been organised of prayer and also to collect money.”

The Charedi community is notoriously insular and practices a 19th century interpretation of the Jewish faith, which includes arranged marriages, wearing old-style European dress, and speaking Yiddish.

It has previously come under scrutiny for threatening pupils with expulsion if their mothers drove them to school on the grounds that it was “contrary to the rules of religious modesty” for women to drive.

Earlier this year, it was reported more than 1,000 children in Charedi communities are attending illegal schools where secular knowledge is banned and they learn only religious texts, meaning they leave school with no qualifications and are often unable to speak English.

Former community members told the newspaper the new fundraising bid tears families apart by denying those wanting to leave the religion access to their children as punishment.

The practice unfairly skews child custody battles in favor of the funded parent who remains in the group rather than enabling custody to be decided on the basis of the interests of the child, they say.

A spokesperson for GesherEU, a charity supporting people wishing to leave Charedi communities, told the Independent: “[Child custody cases instigated by a parent leaving the community are] seen as a huge threat to the Charedi community, knowing that people can leave the community and take their children with them and give them a decent secular education and live successfully outside of the community.

“It is very common within the Charedi community for the religious parent to receive full financial support throughout the court process to ensure the children remain within the community. The parent who stays religious will receive fully funded solicitors and barristers with the sole intention of ensuring the children remain resident with the parent who stays in the community.

“The religious parent will be pressurised into filing for full custody and even lie in court so that the other parent is seen as an ‘unfit parent’ and lose custody/contact with their children.

“Often parents who leave will experience domestic violence as the religious parent will resort to threats and emotional and physical abuse to try and coerce their spouse to remain married and living within the Charedi community,” the spokesperson said.

Female genital mutilation is ‘harmless, helps tame desire’, says senior Russian mufti

Published time: 15 Aug, 2016 23:53

Female genital mutilation does not pose health risks and “does not contradict the dogmas of Islam,” said the head of the North Caucasus Muslim Coordination Center, following a damning report about the outrageous practice in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan.

“As far as I know it is done in order to tame women’s desire a bit. It is absolutely harmless to health,” mufti Ismail Berdiev claimed in an interview with the “Govorit Moskva” radio, referring to female genital mutilation. He added that it is “purely Dagestan’s tradition,” suggesting that the practice is limited to areas of just one of Russia’s southern regions located in the North Caucasus.

Berdiev, who is also a member of the Presidential Council for Coordination with Religious Organizations, commented on a report dedicated to the issue of female genital mutilation in remote communities of Dagestan. It was published by the Russian Justice Initiative, a Russian human rights and legal advice NGO.

According to the report, female genital mutilation is still practiced in some areas of Dagestan and is supported by the community and some religious leaders. The imam of the mosque located in Dagestan’s capital of Makhachkala told Russian Justice Initiative that he considers the procedure obligatory under Islamic norms and stressed that avoiding it means “falling into sin.”

In the meantime, Dagestan’s children rights commissioner said that it already alarmed the regional education ministry and law enforcement in the view of this issue.

Female genital mutilation is widely condemned in the world. It is also condemned by the UN and its various agencies that consider it to be a violation of the right to health and bodily integrity as well as a form of violence and discrimination against women, a form of torture and the violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

It also considered to be a dangerous and health-impairing practice.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for a change in practices in nations where the ritual marks adulthood in March 2016.

“Never before has it been more urgent, or more possible, to end the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM), preventing immeasurable human suffering and boosting the power of women and girls to have a positive impact on our world,” he said in his speech.

According to the UN data, at least 200 million women and girls have suffered the terrible practice of genital mutilation in 30 countries across the world. In some countries, such as Mali, Somalia and Sudan, the procedure is practically universal. Rates are also high in Egypt, although the procedure was technically outlawed in 2007.

Top Russian mufti who said FGM ‘reduces perversions’ tells RT his statement was ‘joke’ gone wrong

One of Russia’s most senior Islamic scholars says his statement that Muslim women should undergo genital mutilation to “decrease the amount of sin in the world” was taken too literally by the media and misinterpreted.

“I was asked by the media if I was aware of the practice of female circumcision. I said I was, though it is not a part of Sharia [Islamic law],” Ismail Berdiev, the head of the North Caucasus Muslim Coordination Center, told RT in a phone interview.

“Then as a joke I added that if there was more of it, there would be less perversion in the world. And the media just printed the words and ran with the story…next I hear of it, is ‘cleric wants to sterilize all women’.”

As well as heading an organization that represents millions of Russian Muslims in southern republics such as Chechnya and Dagestan, the mufti, a title given to Islamic scholars, also has a seat on the Presidential Council for Coordination with Religious Organizations, meaning he has a say in developing Russia’s religious policies.

While different quotes appeared from the mufti throughout Tuesday, in at least one, given to the respected state news agency Interfax, Berdiev allegedly claimed that, “all women must be circumcised to reduce perversions in the world, to tame sexual urges.” He also said that the practice was absolutely "harmless" to health.

In 2012, the UN General Assembly called for a worldwide ban on the practice – which involves cutting off women’s clitorises, in a way that usually stops them from being able to achieve sexual pleasure. More than 200 million people, predominantly in Africa, have undergone one of the variants of the procedure, which is also known as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). It frequently leads to infections and long-term complications.

RT asked Berdiev to clarify his position on FGM once and for all.

“Of course I think FGM is medieval barbarism,” said the scholar. “But this is a matter for the family, and we shouldn’t necessarily interfere. I don’t think it is a big problem, and just because someone performed female circumcision somewhere once upon a time, doesn’t mean we have to talk about it endlessly.”

200mn women victims of genital mutilation in 30 countries, cut before age of 5, UN says
Interest in FGM, which is a less widely-discussed topic in Russia than in the West, was sparked by a report released at the weekend by the Moscow-based Russian Justice Initiative (RJI) a human rights group.

RJI interviewed dozens of women from remote communities in Dagestan, who said that the practice is prevalent in certain villages and remote communities, though not universally so.

While it is impossible to gather precise numbers on such a taboo topic, the group said that tens of thousands of women had gone through the procedure, which is usually performed on children before the age of three, since the 1970s.

All clerics who spoke to RT opined that the Koran in no way obliges female Muslims to undergo circumcision, but said they understood certain rationale behind the practice, without endorsing it.

“The feverish discussion of the topic should prompt us to pay attention to the moral health of society as a whole, and not just a single practice aimed at stopping moral decay,” said Ildar Alyatdinov, the

Chief Imam of the Moscow Cathedral Mosque, the city’s 10,000-capacity main prayer house. "The maintenance of proper family ties is the foundation of a society’s success."
